Clothing is Important
The struggle is real when it comes to many aspects of chronic pain, but one that often gets overlooked is our clothing.
Choosing an outfit involves much consideration, especially when factoring in sensory needs, temperature regulation, and the need for clothes suitable for multiple settings such as work, doctor's appointments, or physical therapy. And that's before even thinking about clothes we actually feel comfortable and confident wearing!
For a period of time, I constantly wore workout pants - and I didn't necessarily wear them because I preferred to. I came to realize it was a necessity to my comfort during the day, from needing more rest, to stretching, to walking frequently or doing physical therapy exercises, I always needed my clothing to adapt to my differing needs throughout the day. Clothing that makes us feel confident is just as important as finding clothing that is flexible with our unique daily needs which is why we are going to dive into some clothing options that work for us rather than against us!
By the way...
I am using only pictures of myself in this post to show you how I really use these clothing items in my day-to-day life. Most of the garments I wear are found through thrift shopping, which makes it not only affordable for all income levels but also fights fast fashion. Please be mindful when purchasing more clothing and take a look at your closet. I bet you already have some of these items in your closet waiting to be worn!
Clothing for Chronic Pain
Jump to the good stuff:
1. Stretchy Pants
Ditch stiff, uncomfortable pants and elevate your style without sacrificing comfort. Whether you're in an office or at home, pants are essential to your wardrobe. They affect mobility, breathability, and stretch. For those who experience weight fluctuations or bloating, flexible pants can boost self-image. Embrace pants that adapt to your needs and feel fabulous without the frustration of ill-fitting clothes.

Flowy, Light-Weight Pants
These pants are perfect for a beach vacation: breathable, non-restrictive, and available in various styles. I prefer fun patterns and tie belts, which add style and the belt can be used for stretching my legs on the go! Pair these pants with a snug top to define your waist or a loose top for a completely flowy and breathable outfit.
Elastic & Stretchy Waistbands
I know some people cringe and judge when they hear about the elastic waistband. I don't blame the nay-sayers as I too have a bad connotation with the word elastic, but in this day and age our clothing has changed for the better, and along with it stretchy clothing is becoming more and more prominent. So my friends, why not give it a try?
Workout pants and leggings
This list is supposed to be about finding clothes that are comfortable but still stylish, so why are the workout pants on here? Well my dear, workout pants don't have to be just around the house clothes and can be worn in a variety of ways, so why not utilize what is in your closet already.
I recommend taking a look at the leggings and workout pants you currently have. Check to see the condition before deciding if you want to wear these out of the house as pants. Please for everyone's sake check they are NOT see-thru before wearing them out and suffering the embarrassment of someone seeing your panties!
Once you have checked them out, take a look at these outfit ideas to gain a better understanding on how to wear them in a more stylish way!

Outfit Idea #1: Pair workout pants with a flannel and a beanie (also known as my go-to look)
This will keep you cozy and help with temperature regulation, from going into buildings with heaters to outside in chilly temperatures. It is simple but effective, and with styling you will always get a compliment! Or you may make some people jealous by being able to take off some layers to cool off once you are inside!
Outfit Idea #2: Leggings with an oversized sweatshirt
This outfit is sure to make you long for the cool autumn months! Grab your favorite socks or leg warmers, slide into your clogs, put on a cute hat, and you have an easy yet adorable outfit!
Comfortable clothing can only be worn at home? I think NOT.
For work try out some pants that have an elastic waist, as there are so many professional pants that do! I highly recommend taking a look at your company's dress code in order to gauge what is appropriate, but I do not doubt that you can find a pair of pants with an elastic waist that will have you looking professional and feeling comfortable.
Tops for Layering & Functionality
To be able to move with ease, we want tops that are not suffocating us or limiting mobility. Everyone has their preference, but for myself I prefer a snugger top that I can then layer with a looser cardigan to be able to manage temperature dysregulation. But for people with back pain or people who tend to bend a lot during the day, the last thing you want to worry about is having to mess with your shirt consistently!
For my overheating hotties I recommend....
✨Higher quality tank tops ✨
Yes I added higher quality for a reason! While it is nice to wear your most cozy worn-in items, if you want to feel like you are dressing "up" then you need some items that will make you confident without any stains or tears! Tank tops are an essential layering piece that when worn right can be seen as tasteful garments in both personal and professional settings.
For my super chill baddies I recommend....
❄️Fitted long sleeves❄️
To be able to layer your garments you need layers that are more snug so they do not constantly bunch under your sweater, coat, or other outerwear! I prefer a snugger sleeve as well to avoid getting in the way whether I am typing, doing housework, or practicing some selfcare. And for people who can not handle or dislike snug garments, I recommend tank tops with lots of loose layers!
3. Adaptive Footwear
I am a Birkenstock girl, through and through. If you haven't been to my blog before and are unaware - yes, I am from Washington state. So I am 100% on board with socks and sandals, then once summer comes my feet emerge from hibernation and I use my Birks just as sandals.
Footwear is the most crucial aspect of your wardrobe. If you wear uncomfortable shoes that make it even more difficult to move around, or add foot pain to your list of pains for the day, I just have to ask - do you despise pleasure? I can hear the collective sighs and groans of readers, already lost after I mentioned Birkenstocks. But I promise you there are plenty of other pieces of footwear that are more stylish than the socks and sandals combo if you are unwilling to give that a try!
When I am unable to wear my Birks, I wear shoes that are supportive for my feet or add in Dr. Scholl's pads to help give me a bit of extra cushion. I candidly have stuck with my Birkenstocks through it all so sadly I do not have many other options to list here. What shoes are you wearing that help with your pain? Let me know in the comments below!
4. Quality Panties
And I am not talking about only the cute kinds with scratchy lace or fun patterns that look gross after one or two wears (I'm looking at you Victoria's Secret!) It is time to invest in some underwear that will help you feel your best, and don't fret as there are stylish options as well!
Story time! I switched from a birth control pill that stopped my periods to a hormonal IUD for my PCOS, which caused daily bleeding. This was challenging, but period underwear was a game-changer. My sisters recommended it, so I bought this 3-pack on Amazon for $30 and loved it so much that I ordered more. They are comfortable and better for my sensitive skin than pads. There are lots of different styles to choose from as well, even thongs for lighter flow!
For those without period-related needs, I also recommend Wooly Co. Merino Wool panties. They are breathable, quick-drying, and odor-resistant, making them perfect for anyone who sweats. I initially bought one pair of the French cut thong and loved it so much I had to buy more!
5. Cozy Layering Pieces
Not only is this important for creating outfits that can adapt to the temperature or events of the day, but it is also integral for making a stylish outfit as well! Layering pieces are great as you can easily use them in a lot of outfits and a variety of ways. For example, last season my husband bought a fuzzy flannel shirt from Costco which I immediately became obsessed with (I'm actually wearing it in the picture above!). It is just the right amount of warmth and thickness, so of course I ended up stealing it from him. Then I went back to Costco and we bought two more! One of which is mine SPECIFICALLY, but I still wear his all the time as well!
Having extra layers can also help you improvise on the go. Maybe your cardigan becomes a pillow to rest your head on the car window, or take a break at the office. Or the extra flannel you brought becomes an aid in your stretching practice, as you can use it for leverage in a variety of PT exercises when you do not have stretching bands or towels available.
Another favorite that may be obvious to some and not so obvious to others - a blanket scarf. What could you use a blanket scarf for when you aren't wearing it? Well, a blanket of course! It can also be another tool to aid in a variety of exercises, or rolled up to be a meditation pillow or lumbar support for your chair. If you work in an office I highly recommend keeping one around as you never know when you might be able to use it!
Conclusion
These are just a handful of ideas for comfortable clothing options and I am excited to find more as time goes on! If there are any other ideas you would like to share with me, please leave a comment, then we can make an even better list together! At the end of the day everyone is different, but the point is to find clothing that makes you feel your best and look your best. Share with me how you are looking your best down below!
